Project Voice is a vascular health innovation program which will transform outcomes in peripheral artery disease (PAD). The Project Voice program collects and manages medical and patient experience data to achieve better health outcomes, leveraging a unified technology platform to generate data for patient-reported outcomes research and improve patient engagement and health management.
There are four components to Project Voice:
- Digital health platform including wearable devices, trackers, research tools, educational resources and patient peer communities
- Patient-reported outcomes research studies
- Patient resources – educational, access to communities, partnership with their doctors
- Collaborations across the vascular healthcare value chain

Chronic vascular diseases outside the heart are an increasing crisis affecting hundreds of millions due to an aging population and the diabetes epidemic. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) alone has increased 25% worldwide over the last decade and affects 8-10 million Americans, including up to 20% of people over 65. Poor outcomes and high costs related to PAD are the frequent result of widespread issues:
- Low patient engagement delays treatment and reduces compliance, accelerating disease
- Uninformed patients lack capacity for self-health management and communication
- Physical inactivity worsens symptoms, mobility and underlying disease
- Inadequate monitoring delays time-sensitive intervention to prevent severe declines
- Insufficient data impairs decision-making
- Lack of objective data can lead to inappropriate treatment decisions
- Missing patient-reported outcomes data compromises research studies and results
- Incomplete research studies can waste funds, time and innovation potential
Project Voice addresses all of these. Patient input is a particularly crucial priority in determining the treatment of peripheral artery disease. This omission is one of the contributors to over-treatment, the incidence of which has been addressed in the media multiple times.
This 3-in-1 solution for patients, clinicians and researchers includes online research surveys, wearable devices, health trackers, peer communities, and educational resources. Additional partner technologies or programs for these audiences are easily integrated.
Our digital health platform is licensed from MedHelp, the consumer division of Aptus Health. MedHelp is the world’s largest online health community and consumer health platform, empowering more than 140 million users worldwide each year to better understand and better manage their health.
By providing an integrated, richly resourced solution for patients and clinician/researchers, Project Voice goes far beyond simple fitness trackers or research tools such as Apple Research Kit.
Leading vascular specialists have jointly developed the Project Voice program, and confirm that the technology platform will be valuable for clinical research studies. Both academic medical centers and industry are expected to use it to gather patient-reported outcomes and quality of life data. Vascular Cures will both sponsor studies and promote third party use of Project Voice in clinical trials through its long-standing relationships at premier academic medical centers throughout the US. In order to validate it as a research tool and program, Vascular Cures will sponsor a limited number of research studies. A 21 patient feasibility study has been completed at Wake Forest, under the direction of Dr. Matthew Corriere. Subject to guidance from our MAB, two more sponsored research studies are envisioned for FY2017. There will be a second feasibility study at Dartmouth that utilizes the improved technology platform based on feedback from the Wake Forest study; and a 50 -100 patient multi-site study that evaluates the use of patient-reported outcomes data.
Improving patient engagement and empowerment is a key part of Project Voice, through self-health tracking, community building and education. In FY2017, patients will be introduced to Project Voice through research studies and social media. In subsequent years, they will be exposed to it through healthcare providers and direct marketing initiatives. A robust patient community will yield opportunities for patient experience data, clinical trial recruitment, and market insights.
